          Attala County's population is an estimated 18,000, with 7,000 being located inside the city of Kosciusko (according to the1990 census)  The area is privileged to a year round average temperature of 63 degrees with average precipitation.  Kosciusko and Attala County are  located geographically in the center of the great state of Mississippi.  The average cost of living is 10 percent below the national average with the average cost of housing being 24 percent below the national average. Kosciusko's central location puts it at an important crossroads in the South. It is located just 70 miles from Jackson (the state capital), 130 miles from Memphis, Tennessee and 250 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana. The historical Natchez Trace flows through Kosciusko and provides a scenic link to Jackson and to other points south and northeast. Five state highways ensure vital commercial links to every part of the state and to the entire southeastern United States. Recent projects include the new bypass located outside of Kosciusko.  It connects State Highways 35 and19 to Highway 43 and State Highway 43 to Highway 12.  Plans for the future include completing a four-laning project from Highway 12 to Interstate 55.  For more information on this area or for more detailed maps of the Kosciusko area go to the Mississippi Department of Transportation Website.

Transportation Services
    
Federal Express, United Parcel Service and Airborne Express provide parcel service to the area. Also, six motor freight carriers serve the area. Commercial air transportation is provided in Jackson and in Columbus. The Kosciusko Airport features a 5,000 foot runway.
      The Mississippi River is west of Kosciusko.  It is served by the U.S. Customs Port of Entry in Greenville, MS. Additional barge access to the east is available on the Tennessee/Tombigbee Waterway.

Attala County Library
    
Residents of all ages benefit from the Attala County Library, which is headquarters for the five-county Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System. The 18,000-square-foot facility is located just off the square in Kosciusko and is a beehive of activity that serves thirteen separate public libraries. Among its many free services are story hours, continuing adult & children's programming, reference & research services, services for the handicapped, videos & audio books, typewriters, computers with interactive encyclopedia programs & internet access, copying & fax machines, as well as two public meeting rooms.  The library is open from 9:00AM to 5:00PM on Monday through Friday.
